Davie Furey has recruited the musical prowess of some of Ireland’s top musicians for his upcoming album ‘Haunted Streets’, set for release February 19th. The eleven track record features the likes of Steve Wickham of The Waterboys, Darren Holden, Susan O’Neill and many more.
Each song takes the listener on a folk-rock journey, comprised of easy-listening instrumentals and Furey’s deeply soft vocals which completely steal the show. Furey’s singing is touchingly complimented by the backing vocals and call-and-response in ‘Secret Light’, where the Irishman also doesn’t shy away from demonstrating his impassioned skill behind a microphone. The stand out aspect in ‘Just Like The Wind’, on the other hand, lies in the addition of bongos and flute, which give the track an almost tribal aura, as though it should be listened to by campfire, watching the smoke rise up and dissipate in the moonlight.
Furey’s experience and adoration of creating moving music is spread throughout the tracks, while the best part of each song is different to the last, with various instruments or vocals taking centre stage. The electric guitar in ‘Who Am I’, for example, is more resembling of a deep western country track, which Furey quickly dispels through a serenading of Irish violin that instantly situates the listener back in the hazy charm of an Irish Pub. Though, the album is not nearly just storytelling and picture painting, with Furey very clearly underlining the severity of environmental issues in ‘The Magic of the Ocean’, which is a touching and very personal appreciation of nature and natural beauty, unsubtly calling out to listeners to take better care of the world.
Collectively, ‘Haunted Streets’ is a melting pot of emotion, while each track individually offers something different with Furey’s rustic, endearing vocals being the glue that sticks everything together.
