It may seem like yesterday that we were belting ‘Boys In The Better Land’ through our car radios after the Dublin locals Fontaines D.C. exploded onto the alt-indie scene with Dogrel, arguably one of the best debut albums in the genre from the past decade.

With A Hero’s Death coming out in July of last year, one year after their first, fans have been treated to a quick fix of poetically punk anthems. Throw in the utterly endearing Irish charm of singer Grian Chatten’s vocals and it’s evident that the band have found a very effective, listenable formula.

News of a third album, which bassist Conor Deegan revealed in a Reddit Q&A recently, genuinely comes as quite the shock, though a very welcome one at that. The band’s sophomore record was such a success, and met with much critical acclaim, that Fontaines D.C. had more than earned a deserved rest away from the studio.

With no plans of touring to occupy the time, however, it seems the effortlessly cool quintet have gotten straight back to work, with the final mix of their third project being completed last week, Deegan explained.

“We just finished mixing the next record last week, sounding really great. It’s funny because we were so swept up with touring when we were writing a hero’s death, I think we only got a sense of what that record really is now.

“But with this one we were really well rested and present mentally for writing it, so the music really reflects that. Can’t wait to put it out, it’s a good one.”

Elsewhere, Fontaines D.C. have been supporting their local football team Bohemians F.C in more ways than one. They’ve bought sponsorship of the team, with the band’s name newly plastered across the away shirts of the Dublin outfit. 15% of the sales will go to support the homelessness charity Focus Ireland.
