Not long ago, the minds of many turned to chess after the unexpected success of the Netflix hit ‘The Queen’s Gambit’. However, many have already been fascinated by the game and are happy to see it being spread to a wider audience, including Chilean artist and chess player, Juga di Prima, who has been merging her two passions of music and chess since 2017.

She has recorded multiple chess-themed tracks, introducing the magic of chess to the masses, while she also scripts music videos which accompany her compositions in the process.

Her song Oh Capablanca has been described by chess masters and players across the world as “The best song ever written”, featuring a bond style beat and lyrics about a daring chess game.

Tactical, on the other hand, has the sound of a sensual yet edgy thriller about inner struggles. Juga’s resulting popularity saw her receive an invitation to sing for the top chess champions at the Batumi Chess Olympiad, the World Chess Championships in London, the European Golden Pawn in Montecarlo and the Global Chess Festival Budapest. She also became a Goodwill Ambassador for Artistic values of Chess, an award also received by artist Yoko Ono

2021 is set to be Juga’s year with her upcoming audio-visual project entitled ‘Chess Divas‘ set to be aired on Norwegian channel TV Norsk and other major online media. This project is bringing together chess players from across the globe of all genders, backgrounds and ages to celebrate the art and beauty of chess. Through this project, Juga hopes to make 2021 the year for chess.

Over the last year, sales of chess sets in the United States rose by around 25 percent, only slightly faster than the toy industry overall, said Juli Lennett, a toy industry analyst with NPD, a market research company. But in the weeks since “The Queen’s Gambit” premiered, she said, sales have grown 125 percent.’ – New York Times, 23/11/20

“Chess.com has seen a stratospheric rise in players since the release of The Queen’s Gambit on 23 October, breaking records for the site. Spokesman Nick Barton said they had seen a “surge in brand new players”. New members in the US have gone up from around 6,000 a day between 1 and 22 October to over 30,000 on recent days this month” – The Guardian 29/11/20
